We’re breaking away from the Pantone Wedding Colors for this article, but will resume our series with our next Bridesmaid Dress inspiration segment. In this article, we’ll give a little style advice and inspiration to your bridesmaids’ style using Black as the dress color choice… and how to keep it traditional, or add a little contemporary edge to the looks.
Black Bridesmaid Dresses: Let’s start with a little inspiration with this classic black & white image of the Seine River from Tommy Turner (available at Fine Art America).
Black gives an instant feel of elegance and edge to anyone wearing it. Traditionally, it’s “the” background to any wedding next to “white”.As always, the length you choose will help drive the look and mood you want to set. It goes without saying, that choosing black for your bridesmaid dresses will work in any length.
Black is so versatile, a dress that combines different textures keeps the look elegant and contemporary. Adding a little bling and keeping it to 1 accessory only adds to the elegance of this look.
Keep it simple. With the above dresses “built-in” accessory in the straps, you need no accent jewelry. The most we would “advise” is a simple bracelet if you feel you really want some jewelry. Let the dress design and fabric do the talking. Remember, as much as you love your bridesmaids, and want to make them feel special on YOUR wedding day, you want them to be the “base” background look for your wedding… not the focal point.
Choosing a vintage design and textured fabric with a metallic strappy sandal keeps the look simple, elegant, and makes a contemporary statement at the same time. We always encourage our clients to look outside the traditional “bridesmaid” dress choices, look at cocktail dresses too, especially in black.
Choosing Black and adding the right accessories can add a little edge to soft traditional fabrics, still keeping the look romantic and timely.
Style tip: Remember when there is more movement in the dress and accessories, keep the shoe in a neutral or an understated metallic to keep the eye on the look as a whole.
When choosing a dress with texture and built in accessories as in this Noir-Lazaro dress, we recommend keeping the pop of color in your florals to keep the look clean.
So many options with accent colors with a black dress. As always, whether your “look” is traditional or contemporary, keep the pop of color in 1 item to keep the look classic and cohesive.
Have fun with texture! If you keep the lines clean in your dress, you can punch up the texture in your shoe and/or florals!
When adding heavy texture in florals, keep the shoe simple and understated to keep your Bridesmaids’ ensembles from looking overdone, especially with flowing fabric in the dress. The dress above is simple in design, but there is style movement in the chiffon, which dictates the need for simple accessories.
This fab 1956 Vintage Saks 5th Avenue Dress is so timeless, it can be easily paired with a contemporary metallic strappy sandal to give a little edge to the look……It works beautifully, keeping the “statement” in the shoe. Even though the bouquet has a good deal of texture in it, keeping it in white tones makes it work.
Love this look. Pop of color in Bright Red Jimmy Choo pump and mirroring the flutter collar of the dress in the Anenome Bouquet is a win-win. Textures are carried through and the clean line of the shoe works, still giving the pop of color our Bride wanted.
Wedding Style Pro-tip: Less is more, especially when you are adding a pop of color in accessories.
