Decorating your Bedroom-5 Quick and Easy Steps

Decorating your Bedroom-5 Quick and Easy Steps
Keeping your bedroom space inviting is important in any relationship, whether you started living together back in college, or if you are planning to move in together after your wedding. Even if you do live together before the wedding, (like most couples do!) we suggest doing a little make-over to your bedroom to unveil close to your wedding day.
This way it really marks the occasion of you starting off the new chapter in your life together!

Bringing Feng Shui into your bedroom is a good place to start. Good Feng Shui will help promote a free flow of loving energy that naturally invites you into the space. Using basic Feng Shui principles can also help if you are the type of person that gets overwhelmed easily with decorating. An example of Feng Shui bedroom principals is beautifully captured in the above image by Josh Kuchinsky’s image above.

Try using Basic Feng Shui guidelines as a little checklist. If you start feeling overwhelmed by choices, and have the urge to spend, refer back to basic Feng Shui principles and the below 5 steps. We hope this will help control any impulse buying feeling that might kick in when you are redecorating!

Before we get into the 5 quick and easy steps, let’s think about what uses your bedroom will have, without getting too personal of course:)!
You want to create a beautiful, calming, nurturing space that you can both enjoy, feel comfortable in, a place for a quick respite, to rejuvenate…. body, mind, and soul……Think “Shared Sanctuary”.

All of that said, having your favorite things around you is important in this space, but try to keep the chotchkies to a minimum, and bring in your favorite “couple” colors into the room instead.
Remember, you are creating a space for both of you….so even if you are the one doing the decorating, and you l.o.v.e. hot pink… your partner may not. It may actually make your fiance uncomfortable in the space (your bedroom) and that’s not a good place to start when you are beginning the new chapter of your life together! (see article: Setting up your Home: Bridging your 2 Styles for more advice and inspiration). Using the above photo as example, even having white furniture might be a bit too feminine for a shared space.
If you love the above look, you can still bridge the feminine and masculine by adding a darker wood furniture choice, adding a richer wall paint color, and change the window treatment to a more masculine fabric.

How easy is that?!
We’ll give you some more examples, advice, and inspiration images as we move through this article.

Here we go! On to the 5 Quick & Easy Steps!

# 1Choose soothing colors and fabrics for your base décor items.
Style Inspiration and Design Bedroom Decor Tips
It goes without saying that you need to SLEEP in your bedroom. So you don’t want to have super bright colors that keep you awake or reflect a lot of light. This does not mean you have to use all dark colors. And if you are a “color” person, it also doesn’t mean you can’t introduce a pop of bright color in room accessories! However, you will want a nice balance of décor that encourages relaxation.
Sticking to the best Feng shui colors for bedrooms are neutrals starting in shades from white to dark brown. We recommend using these in the base room decor items: Walls, Flooring, Trim, Headboard/Bed, and Window Treatments.

# 2. Place your bed in the room so it is easily approachable from both sides.
When deciding on your bed placement for the beginning of the new chapter of your lives together, consider the equality of the shared space. Place your bed so it equally accessible from both sides. Also have a bedside table on each side of the bed. Think about how you are setting up your room and how this should be a “shared” and “equal” space.  This will automatically give your new bedroom equal sharing space, no matter what side of the bed is your’s.

#3. Having a good mattress, a solid headboard, and high quality sheets made from natural fibers is the best way to start in your base plan to decorate.

A “good looking” and well-balanced bed is very important in creating a perfect bedroom. A good mattress, a solid headboard and high quality sheets from natural fibers are also very important in creating an idyllic bedroom.

Again, in your base decor items, start with your functional items (bed, mattress, headboard, sheets, and blankets) and then build around these. If you are on a budget, and you are redecorating, remember to Bridge your 2 Styles (see previous article here).

Quick side bar before we move on to the next step:
You can go with 2 schools of thought when using your base decor items in your bedroom:

The first:……Take your 2 styles and personal items and Bridge them together in the surrounding décor of the room. If you want to use “your” art in the room, then compromise and use your partner’s accent pillows.
This is a great way to start show compromise early on in your relationship and in your shared space.

On a budget? ….No worries! Even purchasing a new duvet cover, bedding, a few accent pillows, or a great piece of art together is a update to the room. And! If you are getting married and you are planning on having a gift registry, you can have fun “shopping” and adding new bedroom decor items to your wish list together too!

The second school of thought: Redecorate the entire space in neutrals and new items that you choose together – making the entire space literally “neutral ground” coming from both of you.
Incorporating your combined compromised choice of paint, color scheme, the bedding, furniture and art will be a fun decor project you can do together!

Either way, you will really have a new start… together! …okay, now back to the Quick & Easy Steps!

# 3Décor and Art in the Bedroom: Choose your art and images wisely for your bedroom.

Here’s where you can have some fun with color.
Feng Shui Tip: Choose images and art that you want to see happen in your future together. Happy, colorful, art that has energy to it. (It can be black and white too, but keep the mood of the art “upbeat”.

# 4 Do not have a TV in your bedroom.

Having a TV in your bedroom will distract you both. The focal point in your bedroom immediately changes from the intimacy in your relationship to the TV. It can also distract you from actual sleep!

# 5. Have a few options for lighting in your bedroom.

Having a few different options for lighting is a great way to create ambienceYou’ll want the option of bright light too, but installing a simple dimmer switch is a nice way to create another lighting option without doing a major electrical overhaul. And of course there are always candles!!
Introducing candles into your bedroom décor is the best way to instantly create romance (and good Feng Shui!) in your bedroom.

Bonus Feng Shui Tips: Make sure you open your windows frequently to reintroduce new air and refreshed energy into the space. You can also use an air purifier to keep fresh air circulating. Having plants in your bedroom are a good way to keep the air fresh too, but make sure you don’t place the plants too close to your bed.
And! If you are the type of person that can not keep plants alive, do not have plants in your bedroom.
Dying plants and dried flowers are bad Feng Shui! So keep your relationship “alive” by not having dying plants or flowers in your bedroom.

Here’s a recap of the 5 Quick & Easy Steps:

# 1Choose soothing colors and fabrics for your base décor items – remember to keep it neutral.
# 2Place your bed in the room so it is easily approachable from both sides.
# 3Choose your art and images wisely for your bedroom.
# 4   Do not have a TV in your bedroom.
# 5. Have a few options for lighting in your bedroom.
