Engagement Ring Insurance
You’re Engaged!! Congratulations! Here’s another installment of our “You’re Engaged” article series!
Real Planner Advice: Insure your Engagement Ring! – Engagement Ring Insurance
As Real Wedding Planners, we advise all our clients to insure their engagement & wedding rings.
You might think….”Oh, I never lose my jewelry, nothing will happen”… And some brides-to-be might even think, “If I loose it, we’ll just buy another ring” (believe it or not! we have heard that statement more than a few times from brides).
We know your fiance’ did a perfect job picking out your engagement ring! … & they may have even gotten it in the perfect size… which is great! That will definitely help ensure you don’t lose your ring.
If you feel your ring fits perfectly, wonderful!
LSE Real Wedding Planner Tip: Visit your jeweler… just in case, for peace of mind, and to make doubly sure it fits you well.
Another thing we hear after the sizing is done when we ask our clients if they have purchased insurance is, “We just had my ring sized, it fits perfectly, I’m never taking it off, so I won’t lose it”
From experience: Real Wedding Planner Information: In the next 12-18 months during your engagement and wedding planning year…. Your body weight IS going to fluctuate. Good or bad, it’s going to happen. 90% of you will lose weight, for a lot of reasons, from dieting, to stress, to seasonal fluctuations, it’s just something that happens to everyone.
That means your ring will either get loose or tight over the span of time.
That said, if it becomes loose, you might not notice it right away…. or if it becomes tight and uncomfortable, you might slip it off and unintentionally mislay it or lose it.
We can’t say enough to think seriously about purchasing insurance for your engagement ring.
If you are already living together, the good thing is, that most homeowners’ insurance will cover a loss of your wedding ring… but usually only up to a point.
LSE Real Planner Advice: Contact your insurance agent and add a little “umbrella” policy to your homeowner’s or condo insurance just for your rings.
Not sure what type of insurance you have? Make a quick call to your insurance agent. They will be more than happy to help you.
Ask your insurance agent what type of coverage you have and ask for a quote to increase your coverage to include your engagement ring (and wedding rings).
God forbid you lose your ring… Of course it can be replaced, at the end of the day, it is just jewelry. But it is probably 1 of the most, if not THE most sentimental piece of jewelry you own now, so you might as well cover it. That way, if it is lost, you can replace it quickly.
Have an appraisal done, and keep it with your important documents.
Speaking from experience, even those most financially sound clients have felt the loss of sentimental jewelry, so be smart about it.
Believe it or not, we had a client lose their 1.2 million dollar engagement ring in the Ocean while at the beach on their honeymoon. Luckily, they took our advice while we were planning their wedding, and had it insured. They immediately placed a claim and had the engagement ring replaced in no time.
This is especially important to do for family heirloom pieces. It is the responsible thing to do especially if you know are the proud “keeper” of a vintage engagement ring that has been in your fiancé’s family for years.
Take photos of it, and insure it. That way, if anything happens, at least you can have it remade into the same design. For a quick “How to” guide visit WikiHow here
