Wondering what to do when you get engaged! .…Here are the very first top 10 things to do!
We’ve included some of Lisa Sammons Events’ past & present bride & groom engagement photos to get you in the mood & to inspire you for your upcoming engagement shoot!
#1. Who should you announce your engagement to first?
Real Wedding Planner Advice: The first people you should “tell” about your engagement is your parents….then your family & closest friends…. before you post anything via social media!
#2 Choose your date! If you don’t decide on your wedding date “in the moment” of your engagement, then talk about the season in which you would like to get married.
Real Wedding Planner Advice: Remember to give yourself at least 12 months (preferably 18 months) pre-wedding planning time before your wedding date. If you keep your date flexible and just to the season initially, you will have a better time during your wedding venue scouting process.
#3 Write a rough draft of your guest list. It doesn’t have to be your final guest list, but you have to start somewhere! Making a rough draft of your guest list is a great way to get an idea of what your wedding will feel like.
Real Wedding Planner Advice: Think about how you want your wedding to feel while you are compiling your guest list as well. Do you want it to be a big blow-out statement wedding? or Do you prefer a small, intimate wedding?
#4 Insure your engagement ring & for the brides reading this article…Real Wedding Planner Advice: Treat yourself to a manicure!
You will be showing off your ring (and hand!) more frequently, so you’ll want to look your best and show off your beautiful engagement ring with confidence!
#5 Start a Pinterest account! It’s a fun way to keep your wedding Style, Inspiration, & Design organized.
Real Wedding Planner Advice: Keep your wedding ideas “board” secret … for 2 reasons… 1. You want to have a “wow” factor at your wedding so keep the element of surprise for your guests to yourself. 2. Too many public or shared wedding boards can be overwhelming for any bride. As much as our dearest of dear friends and relatives want to help (and they are excited for you too!) the amount of input can become too much for some brides & grooms… so LSE’s advice is to keep it private!
Doing so will help you keep focused on YOUR vision through your wedding planning process as well.
#6. Hire your wedding planner! & Real Wedding Planner Advice: Remember…. don’t book your wedding venue before you hire your wedding planner….Wedding Planners can save you an amazing amount of money with venue bookings.
#7. Do your research on wedding venues & locations. Real Wedding Planner Advice: Do you want a tented wedding? or an “inside” wedding? Will you plan your wedding in your home town? and will your wedding be a destination wedding?
#8. Give some serious thought to your wedding budget & who will be financing your wedding... whether your parents are hosting or if you & your fiance are, you will need to know your “number” before you can begin any wedding planning. Your guest list may be impacted by this, so try to be realistic with your wedding invitation list and the number in your bridal party. (see LSE’s complimentary budget planner page here! – please use it with our compliments!)
#9 Start thinking about your engagement shoot & what type of engagement photos you would like!
Talk over your ideas with your Wedding Planner & they can suggest the best fit of engagement & wedding photographer for your style & personality. They can also help you brainstorm creative ideas to note your interests, special locations to both of you, and even the “feel” of your wedding (traditional vs. campy, or theme-oriented) for your engagement shoot.
